Join us from November 6-9, 2024, in the scenic surroundings of Mundaring, as we host the WFDF 2024 World Team Disc Golf Championship (WTDGC 2024). This prestigious event, under the governance of the World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF), brings together the world’s top disc golfers in a thrilling team-based competition. Teams from around the globe will battle it out not only for the championship title but also for a coveted spot in the International World Games 2025 in Chengdu, China.

What is Disc Golf?

Disc golf is a flying disc sport governed by the World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF). It’s a sport enjoyed by people of all ages, identities, and economic backgrounds, making it a great lifetime fitness activity. Easy to learn and inclusive by nature, disc golf allows players to match their pace to their capabilities, ensuring that everyone can participate.

Disc golf is similar to traditional golf, but instead of hitting a ball into a hole, players throw a disc from the tee to hit an above-ground target in as few throws as possible. Courses are often shorter than ball golf courses, but they make greater use of natural obstacles and undulating terrain.

This sport is built on principles of equality and inclusion. The WFDF emphasizes the importance of issues like climate change, sustainability, development, and inclusion in all disc sports, including disc golf. While many players focus on competition, the WFDF is equally committed to fostering participation, engagement, and healthy lifestyles across all communities, regardless of gender, ability, or social class.

Disc golf is accessible to everyone—it’s inexpensive to play, and even if there isn’t an established course nearby, players can create their own courses with temporary baskets or other objects. The sport encourages self-officiating, with all players adhering to a code of conduct that emphasizes honesty, integrity, and self-regulation. Like all disc sports, disc golf helps develop personal strengths such as resilience, reliability, and resourcefulness.

Disc Golf in Australia

In Australia, disc golf has been steadily growing in popularity, thanks in large part to the efforts of Australian Disc Golf (ADG). As the key organization promoting and governing the sport within the country, ADG plays a crucial role in liaising with the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) and the World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF). They are also responsible for national team selection, ensuring that Australia is well-represented on the global stage. The vibrant and passionate community of players, supported by ADG, continues to expand, with numerous courses spread across states and territories. Australian disc golf enthusiasts are known for their welcoming spirit and dedication to the sport’s core values of equality and inclusivity. Events like the upcoming WFDF 2024 World Team Disc Golf Championship in Mundaring, which features the recently enhanced Mundaring Disc Golf Course, underscore Australia’s commitment to the global disc golf community and its role in fostering the sport’s development both locally and internationally

Understanding Match Play in Disc Golf

Match play is a unique and exciting format in disc golf that emphasizes head-to-head competition, where each hole is a battle on its own. Unlike stroke play, where the total number of throws determines the winner, match play is all about winning individual holes.

How It Works

In match play, two players or teams compete directly against each other. The goal is to complete each hole in fewer throws than your opponent. If you win the hole, you earn a point; if your opponent wins, they earn a point. If the hole is tied, no points are awarded. The match continues until one player or team is ahead by more points than there are holes remaining, at which point they are declared the winner.

Why It’s Exciting

Match play brings a strategic element to disc golf that isn’t as pronounced in stroke play. Since each hole is its own contest, players can take more risks or adopt different strategies without worrying about the cumulative score. This leads to more aggressive play and dramatic swings in momentum, making every hole crucial and every shot potentially decisive.

Team Match Play

In team-based match play, like what you’ll see at the World Team Disc Golf Championships, the format becomes even more thrilling. Teams must carefully choose their players for each match, balancing strengths and weaknesses to outmaneuver their opponents. This format fosters teamwork, strategy, and the exhilarating pressure of representing your country on the world stage.

Whether you’re a player or a spectator, match play offers a dynamic and intense experience, showcasing the mental and physical skills that make disc golf such a compelling sport. At the WTDGC 2024, you’ll see the best disc golfers in the world face off in match play, where every throw counts and the margin for error is razor-thin.
